There are three prime types of laptop batteries distinguished.
Nickel Cadmium (NiCd) batteries were the first rechargeable batteries. They did not cost much and produced a lot of power. Nonetheless, they were quite heavy and are not exploited these days any more.
Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries are unsuitable for laptops of the new generation. Their output is higher in comparison with NiCd batteries. Moreover, they are cheaper and safer. The only drawback is the so-called memory effect they have. If the NiMH laptop battery has not discharged fully, it will remember it and its output will be lower.
Lithium Ion (LiON) batteries are generally recommended to install in laptops of the new generation. They are lighter comparing with NiCd and NiMH laptop batteries and have not got any memory effect. However, LiON laptop batteries cost a lot.
In fact the price for a laptop depends on how long you can use your laptop. Thus, it mainly depends on purposes you use your laptop for. Those who travel widely, need an extended energy source.
If you want to replace your battery, insure it is compatible with a laptop make, in spite of the fact that a lot of batteries now are compatible with all models. Afterwards consider 2 main ratings on it: Volts and Milliamps. The voltage should be within 10% of the original battery voltage. When purchasing a laptop battery, always search for the one with the biggest Milliamps.
An external laptop battery is attached to a laptop via an AC adaptor plug consisting of an adapter, a cord and 13 other connectors.
When you purchase an AC adaptor, assure that it will suit the current output and voltage. These data are normally placed on labels of a laptop and on the original adapter. The character 'V' means voltage and 'A' or 'mA' - current output. The voltage figure should be within 10% of your original adaptor voltage. The Amps figure can be higher but should not be lower in comparison to the original current output.
Ensure that the tip dimentions of an AC adaptor and the shape of a battery you have chosen are identical to the original ones.
